Since a manufacturer could use variation of the same size engine in one model, in order to identify the proper engine code you need to know exactly the location of the engine code in manufacturer’s VIN codes.
Mostly an International VIN code consists of 17 characters unique to each vehicle. There are:
1. 1st-3rd characters (identify the manufacturer, make and type)
2. 4th-8th (identifying different aspects of the vehicle)
3. 9th (specially determined by a complicated formula or check digit)
4. 10th (the model year of the vehicle)
5. 11th (the plant of manufacture)
6. 12th-17th (sequential production number for the manufacturers producing >500 vehicles per year).
