This schematic diagrams How to Perform Tachometer Wiring for Diesel Motors Alternator. It is an Auto meter alternator actuated diesel tachometer in this example that might guide you wiring your own device.
Please note that the Red wire of the tacho should be fused (1A, 3AG fast-acting type fuse recommended) before connecting to the positive side of the 12V battery. Instead of a tachometer wiring guide, there is also a guide related on how to perform this tachometer calibration.

The herein terminal description guide lists Jabiru Aircraft Regulator mounted on firewall.
1. Blue – Connect to Alternator (AC), 16 g wire used
2. Black – Connect to earth, 10g wire used
3. Blue – Connect to Alternator (AC), 16g wire used
4. Green – No Connection, 16g wire used
5. Yellow – Connect to (+) DC Buss, 16g wire used
6. Red – Connect to (+) DC Buss, 10g wire used
