How to Test Balmar 6 Series Internal Regulator

In order to determine if the internal regulator (Smart Ready) is functioning properly, here are steps for testing the internal regulator alternator testing guide internal regulator of the Balmar 6 Series alternators.

1.  Disconnect the external regulator wiring harness from the alternator wiring plug
2.  Turn the ignition switch to the ON position
3.  Connect the positive probe of your test lamp on the FIELD terminal of the wiring plug.
4.  Connect the tester’s negative probe to ground.
5.  The test light will illuminate if the internal regulator is working correctly.
6.  If using a multi-tester, adjust the meter to read 24V DC before placing probes at the field terminal and ground. It will show approximately 3V DC if the regulator is properly working.
